What Is A Convention?
Updated On: May 29, 2025

The Miriam Webster Dictionary defines “Convention” as
a: the summoning or convening of an assembly
b: an assembly of persons met for a common purpose

The “common purpose” of union conventions is to bring members and affiliated organizations together to guide our Labor organizations in their mission to serve working people. In many unions and Labor organizations, Conventions are an important part of the organization’s governance. Conventions give union members and stakeholders, who attend as Delegates, the opportunity to set the organization’s agenda and direct its Executive Boards and Leadership through resolutions.

A Convention is also a chance for Delegates to connect with each other and build relationships. At Convention Delegates have the opportunity to meet their fellow union members, and to learn about unions and services for working people they may not be familiar with. This interaction also gives them the opportunity to advocate for causes and initiatives that are important to them.

While these opportunities for socializing and connection are important, there is a lot of work done at Convention. There will often be speakers and panel discussions to educate the Delegates about important topics and issues facing our Labor movement. Workshops may be offered that give Delegates access to new tools or information they can take back to their Locals. Elections may be held for leadership. Perhaps most importantly, resolutions are debated and voted on that will shape the priorities of the organization.

A Labor organization’s Convention is a way to make your and your Local’s voice heard on the state and National Level. While there is fun to be had at Convention, the work on and off the Convention floor is very important.
