Winter School: Saturday, January 31, 2026

In 2026, the Thurston-Lewis-Mason CLC's South Sound Labor School and the WA Labor Education and Research Center (WA LERC) will host a series of Saturday education programs for union activists in Olympia at Evergreen State College

Each school will have one main plenary and 3 interactive workshops, where union members will convene to build their skills and learn from one another.The tentative schedule for the Winter School (January 31, 2026) workshops is:

1:1 Organizing: Structured Conversations
Learn and practice the skills of effective conversations that move our members to action.

Creative Contract Interpretation
You don’t need to be a lawyer! Learn important skills for reading your contract, thinking about how you can interpret it strategically to improve your conditions.

Planning campaigns around grievances and issues
How to seize the opportunity of grievances to build escalating collective action against the boss

1:1 Organizing Tool Kit: Answering Hard Questions and Objections
Learn and practice how to respond to difficult questions when organizing. Get practice being an active listener, answering hard questions, and having better conversations.

Mapping and Leader Identification
Mapping is an essential tool to systematize your union’s organizing practices. In this class we’ll discus how mapping helps us thoroughly organize our worksites.
|
Signing Up Members in Open Shops
Internal organizing skills talking to your coworkers about union membership in an open shop. We’ll talk about 1:1 conversations, answering hard questions, and understanding what it means to be a union member.

Participatory and engaging bargaining
Discussing open bargaining as a way to engage your base and escalate your campaigns.

Mapping the Workplace and Identifying Leaders

Registration costs: $20 for each day school. Your union may be able to sponsor your registration.
