“The Girls” Commemorated on November, 1st
Updated On: Jan 17, 2022
On Monday, Port of Chehalis staff were among the crowd present for the 110th-anniversary remembrance ceremony honoring the memory of "The Girls" at Greenwood Cemetery in Chehalis. "The Girls," as they're now known, were eight young women, ages 14 to 20, who tragically lost their lives in a preventable workplace accident at an explosive powder company while rolling sticks of dynamite.

Today, we have workplace regulations that reduce the risk of preventable tragedies like the one that claimed the lives of these eight local young women, and we're thankful for the work of organizations like the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries and the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, that continue to champion increased workplace safety.

It was an honor to be present for this local historical ceremony, but it's a solemn reminder of the real danger that unregulated, unsafe workplaces can cause — and have caused — even to members of our very own community, right here at home.
