Farm workers at Windmill Farms, a Canadian-owned mushroom producer based in Sunnyside Washington, have been fighting for union representation with United Farm Workers since 2022. The Washington Supreme Court has agreed to hear the workers' appeal in UFW v. Greenwood, which challenges Windmill's attempt to force their claims into private arbitration. 

Please stand with our farm worker siblings by attending the hearing on this case at 9:00 AM on Thursday, October 22nd at the Temple of Justice / Washington State Supreme Court (415 12th Ave SW, Olympia, WA 98501 - click here for a map) on the Washington State Capitol Campus.

The 9:00 AM docket begins promptly, but you must enter the courtroom by 8:45 am. United Farm Workers of America et al. v. Greenwood Mushroom Sunnyside IA, LLC et al., Washington Supreme Court No. 104,226-4 is the first case on the docket. The courtroom is open to the public - please be quiet, listen, and do not disrupt the proceedings. Please dress respectfully; we have been advised that UFW shirts are fine, but ripped jeans are not. 

The whole argument may not last more than an hour, and ideally everyone will leave the courtroom together.

Agricultural workers are excluded from federal labor law, and Washington law doesn't give them collective bargaining rights. Attorneys argue arbitration favors employers and takes away these workers' rights to a jury trial and appellate review. The ruling in this case could affect workers statewide by barring employers from using coercive arbitration agreements.
